About the Author

Steve Collier

I was born in Taunton, Somerset in 1985- the year that brought us Back To The Future, Police Story, The Color Purple, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies and Legend which although not being the best film ever, inspired my favourite video game saga, The Legend Of Zelda and therefore deserves a mention.

Growing up in the late 80’s and early 90’s in England exposed me to areas of popular culture unique to that generation. The political and social landscape of England was rebellious and not content with making do. Technology was changing rapidly and consumer demand coupled with an arrogant amount of excess created something of a mind-blowing playground of invention and entertainment for a kid like me.

Being captivated by Dinosaurs, Spielberg movies, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog at such an age has definitely influenced my personal ambitions, imagination and creative style but when I saw Jurassic Park in 1994, I put aside (mostly) dreams of being an Archaeologist, Helicopter Pilot and Adventurer and decided I wanted to make films.

My huge appetite for reading from a very young age (Three Investigators, Willard Price, Hardy Boys, the Redwall series to name a few favourites) meant my imagination was healthy and ready to create stories.

As well as Spielberg, I admire the work of Ridley Scott, Edgar Wright, J.J. Abrams, Ed Zwick, Akira Kurosawa, Hayao Miyazaki, Paul Greengrass, Peter Jackson, M. Night Shyamalan, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Danny Boyle, Guillermo Del Toro, David Fincher, Clint Eastwood, James Cameron and anything Pixar make.

However, where other filmmakers started early, I didn’t own a camera until I was 17. I took a Film Studies class in 6th form which inspired me to create (with friends) a series of stop motion sketches with Blu-Tak figures edited in my bedroom and then it was another four years before I made anything else worthy of mentioning. I couldn’t afford film school (Although Raindance have helped me lot recently with their short courses and Film Riot has proven itself to be endlessly inspirational) and very few people I knew at the time were bothered with making films. I mostly taught myself through various means.

I have many, many finished and half written scripts and ideas lurking in the depths of my laptop and brain but am constantly writing.

I also write comic books for my charity project, Japan Comic Aid which I set up to raise funds Japanese Earthquake relief funds. I am one of the founding creators behind Dead Universe Publishing.

The idea behind this blog is to perhaps give you a flavour of my own creative juices which will hopefully entertain and/or assist you in your own endeavours. I’ll show you how I form my ideas, how they evolve and how they develop on the page. I’ll also be writing about films in general and my personal inspirations. I hope you enjoy.
